Hasselblad Unveils Lunar Compact System Camera at Photokina 2012

At Photokina 2012, Hasselblad unveiled its first-ever compact system camera powered by a 24.3MP APS-C format sensor with 25 AF points – Hasselblad Lunar. The CSC can capture both stills and videos and will offer DSLR-like controls.

Hasselblad apparently has 30 different versions of its maiden CSC and does not currently know which ones will make the final cut for production.

The Hasselblad Lunar will be built from titanium, wood, leather, carbon fibre and precious metals with fit and finish Hasselblad is famously known for. Buyers have a choice of wood for finish.

In terms of specifications, the camera will be able to shoot at up to 10fps, with ISO sensitivity from ISO 100-16000. It will also come with a 3-inch high definition LCD/OLED display.

What’s great is that it will accept Sony E and Alpha (via adaptor) mount lenses. Strange but a welcome addition.

What’s not so great would be the price. Expect the Hasselblad Lunar to retail for around €5,000 (around £4,020/$6,525/RM20,500) for the base model with standard finish when it launches in the first quarter of 2013.

The compact system camera or mirrorless market is greatly competitive, currently dominated by the likes of SonyPanasonic and Samsung. Pro-level brands like Nikon and Canon are late entries into this space. Hasselblad can be considered a non-competitor as it doesn’t target the same price points nor the type of mass market audience the rest of the brands compete in.

So, do you want an Aston Martin or a Toyota?

Personally, I’d shell out 1/5 of the price for a Sony NEX-7. 😛

What say you?
