2014 could be the year Firefox OS sees more visibility with more countries offering devices, with pledges from Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom. Mozilla revealed at MWC 2014 that Firefox OS devices will be heading to Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Germany, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.

Deutsche Telekom has said it will expand its Firefox OS offerings to Croatia, Czech Republic, Macedonia and Montenegro.

Budget smartphone maker Alcatel has announced several devices at MWC 2014 including its first tablet – the Fire 7, alongside Fire E, Fire C and Fire S smartphones.

Fire C

The Fire C is the lowest end in Alcatel’s portfolio, sporting a 3.5-inch (320 x 480 pixels) HVGA TFT display and a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor.

Fire E

The Fire E is the budget mid-ranger, packing a 4.5-inch 540 x 960 pixel qHD display, 1.2Ghz dual-core processor and 512MB RAM. Built-in storage is 4GB complemented with a microSD slot.

Fire S

The Fire S is high-specced mid-ranger that comes with 4G LTE, 4.5-inch qHD display, 1.2Ghz quad-core processor and 8MP main shooter as well as a 2MP front-facing.

Fire 7

The Fire 7 is supposedly a ‘concept’ device and is said to share similar specs with the Fire S smartphone.

Firefox OS

What? Another smartphone OS? FireFox is a new open source operating system for smartphones developed by the non-profit organisation Mozilla. Yes the same people who brought you the awesome Firefox browser.

Firefox OS is built entirely on HTML5 and open Web standards, it is truly free from rules and restrictions of other platforms. As you know, Android isn’t truly open and free, as you’ve been led to believe.

Firefox offers an alternative to the smartphone world dominated currently by Android and iOS (and a little of Windows Phone and BlackBerry). Expect budget-friendly devices to become more widely available in 2014. Mozilla apparently has set a goal to push a US$25 device to the market.
